In Safal Cup held in Pokhara, the Lalitpur based club crashed out from the very first match. Among seven matches of the league, Friends have won one, drawn two and lost four matches. With seven points from as many matches, the team is in the 12th position.
"Bad result is the main reason for my resignation," said Gurung, 53, who had set the target of winning title in the initial days of league. Following poor run in the league, Gurung had expressed dissatisfaction with his players.
Gurung, however, clarified that his resignation was not the expression of frustration with players. "I failed to fulfill my responsibilities towards the club. Thus I feel I must leave the team as I could not meet the expectations of club," he said.
"The club will take the decision regarding Gurung after Friday´s match. We don´t have any problem with Gurung. I am not sure whether Gurung will come during the Friday´s match against Nepal Police Club," said Friends President Ratna Sumsher Rana.
Gurung, a retired Indian Army, is also a former coach of Armed Police Force.
