Rajesh Thami and Sanukaju Baruwal were arrested during a raid at a house where they had reportedly stored 29 detonators and 35 gelignites, the police said.
Thami himself told the media at a press meet at the Office of Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ranipokhari on Wednesday that he left the UCPN (Maoist) last year after his three-year stint at the People´s Liberation Army (PLA). "I remained in the camp as a vice-commander for two years. I left the party due to family reasons," he said.
Metropolitan Police Range Bhaktapur also recovered letters and receipts printed in the name of one never-heard-before CPN National Janatantrik Morcha from the house. The group seems to have used the letters and receipts in extorting businessmen.
According to SP Rajendra Shresth, chief of Metropolitan Police Range Bhaktapur, the explosives were found hidden under a cot in the room that belonged to one Subash Rokka. Rokka is at large.
Shrestha said details about the source of the seized explosives as well as of the so-called party are yet to be ascertained.
Baruwal, of Thokarpa-5 in Sindhupalchwok district, however, insisted that he was not aware of the explosives and the party. He said the raided room belonged to one Binod Puri. "Puri phoned me to visit his room and I was arrested upon reaching there," he said, claiming that the police did not bother to arrest Puri, who fled the room overtly .
Police have not disclosed personal details about Thami. "We will disclose teh details after a due process of investigation," SP Shrestha said.
