The locals in the northern belt of district, where local production suffice only for three months, have to rely on food and other daily necessities ferried by mules, sheep and goats from headquarters Chainpur.[break]
“We are facing scarcity of food and other materials as landslides at Bhatekhola-9 have rendered the road unusable even for animals,” Binod Bohara, a local, told Republica over the phone.
Melbisouna, Datola, Rilu, Bhatekhola and other VDCs are reeling under food crisis as the road obstructed during the start of monsoon has not been yet been opened. People of Kadel, Byasi, Kanda, Sunikot, Moulali, Kotdewal, Masta, Kailash and other VDCs are also facing food shortage.
“Obstruction along the road linking the headquarters has made matters worse,” said Birbhan Bohara, a teacher.
Agriculture Office, Bajhang said the district branch of Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) doesn´t have enough food grains for the district that needs 16,000 quintals of food grains every year. The NFC depot at the headquarters has some food but depots at villages have run out of stock for months. “We don´t even have rice to put tika during Dashain,” rued Jayabire Dhami.
People of Baitadi, Darchula, Achham and Bajura districts of far west are also starting to face food scarcity. NFC, Dhangadi said the hilly districts require around 25-30,000 quintals of food grains for the festive season.
