The convention organized on the occasion of 54th anniversary of establishment of FNJ urged the government to punish those involved in killing journalists. The convention also condemned the government decision to withdraw cases filed against murderers of journalists although there were evidence in plenty.
The convention also urged the government and the agitating armed groups not to use journalists as mediator for talks between them. The FNJ convention concluded that using journalists as mediators has posed serious threat to safety of life of the journalists. “We call upon the government and the agitating parties to respect professional ethnics of journalists,” the resolution reads. It also urged the agitating groups in the Tarai to carry out their protests through non-violent way.
Reminding that FNJ was the first professional group in the country to decide to support democratic republican system, the convention urged all the political parties to restore culture of consensus, collaboration and unity to consolidate the republican system. The convention also gave mandate to FNJ central committee to launch fifth round of movement for press freedoms.
At the end of the convention, participants attended a tea party hosted by Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala. On the occasion, Koirala supported the ongoing movement launched by FNJ for freedom of press and saety of journalists. He said he has asked all the party units to support movement launched by journalists in the districts.
On Sunday, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav hosted a tea party at his residence.
