Flood wreaks havoc, scores displaced

MAHENDRANAGAR, Sept 4: The Mahakali river has breached its temporary embankment at Bhimdutta Municipality 11 of Kanchanpur. The water level in the river has risen by 230,000 cusec following incessant rainfall, the police said. The river had destroyed the embankment thrice in August.



With the embankment breached, flood has entered the village sweeping 18 wire messes. The locals have taken refuge at local Mahakali Jana Jyoti Elementary School for fear of being swept away. [break]



Likewise, Tek Narayan Bhattarai from Palpa reports that landslide following continuous rainfall since Saturday morning has obstructed the Siddhartha Highway. The police post at Ragdi said that the landslide occurred at Batuwa, Jagatatra Devi VDC of Syangja.



Although dozers were sent to remove the blockade from Palpa and Syangja, transportation, however, is yet to resume. The police informed that it would take an entire day to clear the road.



Similarly, Kamal Thapa from Rukum reports that 14 VDCs are under the threat of landslide and flood. Locals there have been displaced for fear of flood. The VDCs under high risk of flood include Jyamire, Darne, Bhalkhola, Simruttu, Jhulkhel, Banke Jyula, Jhinchaur, Barkhu, Kaule Chaur, Ghari Khola, Bel Tapu, Chin Bagar, Garaghat and Dhaune Bagar.



A total of 127 families have been displaced due to the high risks of flood and landslide.



The locals of other seven VDCs are also under flood threat. The victims said that they´ve not been able to sleep due to flood threat.



Recent flood on August 19 at Jyamire of Gotamkot had displaced 62 families, VDC chief Tej Bikram Shah said. The flood at Gotamkot has swept away seven houses. Shah informed that they have been taking refuge at Kalika Elementary School for the last 18 days.



This is the first time that so many locals have been displaced. The locals have accused the government of not providing relief and compensation to them. They have also urged the government to provide them alternative settlement.
