The torrential downpour since Friday night has inundated hundreds of bigha of land and hundreds of houses in Surunga-4, Tulsibari. The overflowing water from Biring river has also merged with the breakaway stream of Surunga to make matters worse. [break]
“There is no place where you can set foot,” said Sita Bhattarai. “The river is currently running through my kitchen,” she added. She said everyone in the village is scared due to the flood. “Who can sleep at night when a river runs through the village?” she questioned.
The water from Biring river entered the village from Prajapati village at the north of Surunga-1, Durgapur. The water collected on the two sides of the East-West Highway has also flown into the breakaway Biring stream and a part of Surunga river has joined in just a few meters south of the highway.
The flood has also affected ward number 6, 7, 8 and 9 of Surunga and northern part of Sharanamati VDC. The locals have been petrified as the heavy downpour continued through Saturday afternoon.
“We will not be able to sleep properly now. The river is running through our village,” local Nepali Congress worker Devi Prasad Oli said pointing toward the submerged land.
He said the villagers, who had suffered due to floods last year, will have similar fate this year as well. The flood has swept away construction materials of the under-construction Tulsibari Drinking Water Project.
