BIRATNAGAR, Sept 6: Over 100 houses were submerged under water when Bakraha River entered into human settlements breaching its eastern embankment in Morang district Thursday night.

The river that flows through Itahara-5 of Morang changed its course and entered human settlements in Itahara, Sijuwa and Govindapur VDCs. As their houses were suddenly flooded, the local residents of Itahara-5, Sijuwa-4 and 5 and Govindapu-1, 4 and 7 had to run to safety in the midnight.

As many as 91 houses were inundated with water in Govindapur VDC while 30 houses were covered with water in Sijuwa VDC. In Itahara VDC, which is close to the river, one dozen houses were covered with water.[break]

"The flood came all of a sudden," said Radhika Dhamala, a resident of Govindapur-4. "We fled to an elevated area to save our lives."

According to Morang´s Chief District Officer (CDO) Ganesh Raj Karki, the embankment was partially damaged by the flood one month ago.

On Thursday night, when the water level rose due to heavy rains in the hilly area of Morang, the river breached the already-damaged embankment.

CDO Karki said there was no human casualty.
