KATHMANDU, Sept. 13: Nepal’s savings and credit cooperatives that suffered damages during the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli floods in Rasuwa and Nuwakot will be receiving international financial support worth US $57,000 (Rs 900 million) for rehabilitation.
Chandra Prasad Dhakal, chairperson of the Nepal Federation of Savings and Credit Cooperative Unions (NEFSCUN), informed that the South Korean National Credit Union Federation (NACUFOK) has pledged to provide support worth $50,000. According to Dhakal, NACUFOK made the announcement during the ongoing Asian Credit Union Forum 2026 being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Fifteen cooperatives in Betrawati and Trishuli of Nuwakot district were completely destroyed by the devastating Bhotekoshi flood that struck the region on August 26. Twelve of these are savings and credit cooperatives. Data regarding the impact on cooperatives in the flood-affected districts of Rasuwa, Dhading, and Gorkha are yet to be collected, according to the NEFSCUN.
Cooperative assets—ranging from buildings to documents, passbooks, checkbooks, computers, and other equipment—were washed away or destroyed by the catastrophic flood. Some board members and shareholders of these organizations lost their lives, while many others remain missing.
With cooperative members left homeless, the loans issued by the cooperatives are also at risk. Representatives of the affected cooperative have been calling for assistance ranging from physical resources to resumption of operations and concessional loans for their rehabilitation.
