Flawed deals to blame for power woes: Maoists

KATHMANDU, Sept 21: UCPN (Maoist) on Tuesday attributed the cause behind prolonged power woes in the country to the government´s “inappropriate” decisions to inking “indecent” power generation agreements.



Alleging that the government, in many instances, has trampled on parliamentary procedures to grant power generation licenses, the Maoist´s Department of Water Resources & Energy vowed to halt such “flawed” hydropower projects.[break]



Issuing a statement, the chief of the department, Lilamani Pokhrel, said any proposed agreements of the hydro power projects need to be submitted to the Natural Resources and Means Committee of parliament for discussion. With regardOn behalf of the past agreements, they must be tabled before the Legislature-Parliament for endorsement, the statement reads.



He said the Mahakali Treaty, Pancheshwar Multipurpose Project and Koshi Treaty among others are against the interest of the country and need to be debated nationwide before stepping any further.







Maoist leader CP Gajurel said the sovereignty of the nation will always be at stake during fluid political situation and accused India of harbouring “ill intentions” over the Nepal´s rich natural resources.



“There are many unequal treaties between India and Nepal,” Gajurel said. “India is reaping more benefits and we are apathetic towards it.”



Maoists disrupt hydel construction

TAPLEJUNG, September 21: Maoists have obstructed construction work at Chimal Hydropower Project at Change VDC here. The 90 kilowatt project being built on the Sokhuwa River is completely financed by local people.



Khadga Bikram Subedi, the chairman of the Project Management Committee, said that construction work stopped after Maoists raised many issues related to sharing of profit from the project. Committee members told Republica that Maoists differed with the project management in relation to sharing of profit with those villagers who were not shareholders.
