Film policy adopted streaming film industry

KATHAMNDU, April 7: The government has adopted the 'National Film Policy-2071' to address the growing problems emanating from development of new technology, and changing trend of movie making and screening.

The policy envisions upgrading the national film industry into enhanced new industry resonant of creativity, culture and entertainment in the changed scenario following the second uprising in 2062/063 BS.


The policy approved by Council of Ministers' Economic and Infrastructure Committee is driven with an objective of streamlining the Nepali movie by reforming its quality and inject the potential for expanding its market to compete in the global arena, according to Ministry of Information and Communications.

The policy also envisages adopting the film making as an effective medium of bringing the development of the backward communities including women, Dalits, indigenous nationalities and Madhes in the main stream, said a statement issued by Purushottam Prasad Tiwari, Joint Secretary at the Information Ministry.

As per the new policy, a provision has been stipulated for attracting foreign investment, making Nepal an attractive destination for foreign movie making and promoting the export of Nepali movies.

The policy has classified movies into two categories, namely intellectual, and artistic and commercial genre, and established an investment trust for supporting the film industry. Likewise, for preservation of movies, a film library and national film museum will be established, and coordination carried out with the global stakeholders to contain the uploading trend of films in the internet.

The policy will protect the rights of working film artists and collaborate with Film Development Company Ltd based at Balaju for censorship and making. It is the aim of the policy to facilitate the film registration and monitoring process and provide a special facility to foreign movie makers developing movies that contribute in further publicity of the country as a tourist destination in the world.
