On the night of July 1, Kishor Raya Yadav had taken the 4-year-old away from the village, beaten her unconscious and thrown her into the pond. Yadav is a former Maoist.

RAUTAHAT, July 6: A man in Rautahat has been arrested on the charge of murdering his own four-year-old daughter so that he could claim Rs 5 million insurance.

Kishor Raya Yadav, 39, of Patharabudhram of Maulapur Municipality-6 in Rautahat has confessed to have beaten his daughter unconscious and drowned her in a pond.

On June 2, Yadav had bought a life insurance policy worth Rs. 2.5 million for his four-year-old daughter Laxmi Kumari. Police quoting Yadav said he had sought to insure her for Rs 3 million but he was told that Rs 2.5 million was the maximum insurance amount for a four-year-old. He had paid Rs 175,000 as the first installment of the insurance premium. No one knew the intention behind his insuring only the youngest daughter when Yadav already has two sons and two daughters besides Laxmi Kumari.

He said he murdered his daughter because he knew he could claim Rs 5 million upon her death.

On the night of July 1, he had taken Laxmi, who was sleeping with her mother at their home, away from the village and beaten her unconscious and thrown her into the pond. After throwing the child into the water he had waited till she stopped moving and returned home.

On the next day, he himself went to police and filed a missing child complaint. Following his complaint, police started search for the child and recovered her dead body from the pond on the same day. After seeing bruise marks all over the body, police took the body to the District Hospital, Gaur for a post-mortem examination.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nabin Karki of District Police Office (DPO), Rautahat informed Republica that the post-mortem reports showed that the child was murdered. Then the police started their investigation and family members were called for recording their statements. During their interrogation, police found out that the child's murderer was no other than the father himself. Yadav confessed to his crime on July 3.

On Friday, speaking at a press conference organized by the DPO, Yadav admitted that he had committed the heinous crime out of greed for a huge insurance compensation. He said that the god will punish him for the crime.

DSP Karki further informed that police are working to file a murder case against Yadav.

Yadav is a former Maoist cadre and he had served three years in jail during the insurgency for possession of arms and ammunition. At the press conference, he said his underground name was 'Dhakal'.

Meanwhile, the deceased girl's mother said she had no inkling that the father himself was the murderer until his confession to the police.
