KATHMANDU, Oct 24: The mystery surrounding the gruesome murder of a 29-year-old porter at Ombahal last week has finally been made public. A probe report has unveiled that the murder followed a long-drawn-out family squabbles involving ´irresponsible drinking´, ´domestic violence´ and an ´impaired marriage´.

Nir Raj Danuwar, 47, of Panchkhal-8 in Kavre district, had killed his own son-in-law Dik Bahadur Thapa, of Okhaldhunga, at the latter´s rented room early Wednesday morning. [break]The suspect confessed before reporters on Sunday that he committed the murder of his son-in-law who he said had long been torturing his daughter, Parvati, and two grandsons.

Danuwar said that he stabbed Thapa to death with the help of one ´Saila´ after a binge at a local bar at Jhonche. “We drank profusely in the run-up to my most-sought revenge,” he said. “At around 11 PM, we entered his room and argued with three hours before attacking him.”

“I didn´t mean to finish him. What I wanted was a good lesson to him. But situations led to his death and we hanged him thinking it would be taken as a suicide,” he added.

Danuwar is also a porter based at Bhotebahal area. Initially, he was unhappy about his daughter´s marrying Thapa for it was an inter-caste love marriage. But later on, as Thapa started behaving ruthlessly with his wife and children, he had grown more furious.

Danuwar had also asked his daughter not to bring home Thapa in Dashain. Having said this, he sneaked into the capital two days after ´Tika´ and ended up killing his son-in-law.

A few hours after killing Thapa, Danuwar left the capital by a bus and went to his father-in-law´s house at Baluwa VDC in Kavre, where his wife and children were awaiting to celebrate Dashain. He returned to the capital same day with his family.

Police interogated his daughter Parvati during the investigation, while her father had continuosuly been pleading innocence before the officials.

According to Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD), at least three persons could have involved in the murder. “We are now investigating to nab the accomplices,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rana Bahadur Chand, chief of MPCD.
