Far-western Region's historic win in football

DHANGADHI, March 3: Far-western Region made history by lifting the football title during the Sixth National Games in Dhangadhi on Saturday. The unheralded team from Far-western Region stunned A Division club APF 2-1 on home ground for its first-ever national title in football.



Far-western Region came from behind to win the match in front of 6,000 supporters. The home team, which looked weak in the first half, improved its performance after the interval.[break]



The home team had earlier defeated Natioanl League and A Division champion Nepal Police Club in the semifinal.



Maniram Chaudhary, who had played a key role in each of the earlier matches to lead Far-western Region to the final, once again stole the show. Chaudhary hit the winner seven minutes from time to seal the victory.



Rajendra Rawat had earlier given APF a 32nd minute lead with a header in a corner off Nabin Lama. Kuber Singh scored the equalizer in a rebound in the 65th minute after APF´s goalkeeper Samitraj Bhandari blocked a penalty of Sumit Singh. The penalty was awarded after APF captain Kumar Thapa handled the ball in the penalty area.







Far-western then kept APF under pressure and Chaudhary hit the decider capitalizing on a mistake by APF goalie Bhandari.



The winning team was flooded with cash prizes. Dinesh Group, Dhangadhi provided Rs 101,000 to the team while Kailali Construction Association announced an award of Rs 51,000. Far West Bus Entrepreneurs Committee also provided Rs 51,000. Kailali Chamber of Commerce provided Rs 21,111.



Meanwhile, Central Region won the team championship title of gymnastics in the women´s category on Saturday.



The Central Region team comprising Sunita Niraula, Neena Maskey, Sumnima Chaudhary, Jenny Dangol, Ritika Shrestha and Pinkey Jhang won gold at the covered hall of Dhangadhi Stadium scoring 76.30 points.



Far-western Region finished second with 41.50 points while Mid-western Region settled for bronze scoring 27.50 points.



The players had competed in vaulting table and floor exercise.



In the women´s individual all-round championship, Pinkey Jhang of Central Region clinched gold scoring 17.10 points in floor exercise and vaulting table. Ritika Shrestha (16.40) of Central Region and Pratibha Bista (15.80) of Far-western Region secured silver and bronze medals respectively.



In the women´s individual event championship, Ritika Shrestha claimed gold with 7.60 points in vaulting table. Pinkey Jhang scored 4.3 for silver while Sunita Rana Magar of APF took bronze with 3.90 points.



Likewise, Pinkey Jhang won gold in individual event of floor exercise scoring 9.00 points. Ritika Shrestha (8.00) and Sunita Rana Magar (7.80) finished second and third respectively.
