JHAPA, Feb 9: As many as 321 families who have fallen victim to wild elephant attacks in Jhapa district as of October 10 of the current Fiscal Year (FY) are awaiting compensation from the government.

The wild elephants killed members of their families and damaged their properties in various parts of the district during the period. The damages to properties and crops are estimated to be over Rs 5.8 million.

The victim families have sought compensation from the local authority for the loss and damages, said Forest Officer at Division Forest Office, Jhapa, Rishi Ram Parajuli. The amount includes compensation for the family of the deceased, loss of cattle, and crops, according to Forest Officer Parajuli.

The process is underway to claim compensation for the 194 victims' families, including four killed by wild elephant attacks from October 19 last year to the present date, according to officials.

Apart from the pain of losing their family members or bearing the loss on crops and properties, delays in receiving compensation have further added to the woes of the victims and their families, the officials said.
