Fair price shops in Kathmandu, Lalitpur

KATHMANDU, Oct 2: Public sector entities dealing with essential commodities have opened fair price shops in Kathmandu and Lalitpur, aiming to supply consumable goods at relatively cheaper rates during Dashain, Tihar and Chhath festivals.



The shops are jointly operated by Salt Trading Corporation (STC), National Trading Limited (NTL), Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) and Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) with the objective of ´supplying all necessary items under a single roof´. [break]



The four state-run agencies said the shops offer different consumable commodities at cheaper rates.



NTL is offering home appliances, while STC has kept food commodities for sale. Similarly, DDC has placed its entire range of dairy products and NFC is selling rice at affordable rates.



Basically, the shops aim to serve as the government´s intervention to check undue price hikes in the market.



According to the officials of Ministry of Commerce and Supplies, STC, NTL, NFC and DDC will soon open similar fair shop in Bhaktapur as well.



Saroj Nidhi Tiwari, divisional manager of STC, said that the shops would be operated until the last day of Chhath, which falls on November 11. The shop which has been kept on the premises of NTL in Singha Durbar in Kathmandu will open from 11 am to 6 pm.
