Everest Golf Challenge begins today

KATHMANDU, Dec 3: Everest Golf Challenge will kick off on Friday at the Gokarna Golf Club, Kathmandu.



The hosts, Gokarna Forest Golf Resort, issuing a press release on Thursday, informed that the two-day tournament is being organized to boost golf tourism in the country even as Nepal prepares for Nepal Tourism Year 2011.[break]



According to the organizers, the tournament will have participants from Malaysia and India.



The international players will be joined by local players for the 36-hole tournament to be played in Stableford format. Altogether 50 participants including 13 from the Malaysia-Nepal Business Council will take part in the tournament.



The event will have both individual and team events. Individual event will be played on both days while team event will be held only on the final day. The player scoring the highest points over 36 holes will be declared winner in the individual event.



The captains of Nepal, India and Malaysia will each form a team comprising four players. The best three scores will be accumulated from each team and the team scoring the highest Stableford points will be declared the winner.



The biggest attraction of the event is probably the ´hole in one prize´ -- a Kia car.



Suhrid Ghimire, President of Gokarna Golf Club, expressed his pleasure in hosting the tournament.



"This event will give a very positive message to the golfing community in this subcontinent. We will facilitate in making this event bigger and better in the years to come," said Ghimire.
