KATHMANDU, Nov 24: Traffic police personnel being on duty without proper knowledge of traffic is also the cause of increasing road accidents, according traffic police officers.

Traffic police personnel are sent to duty on roads without necessary training and knowledge, admitted well-known traffic police Inspector Sita Ram Hachhethu and Chief of Department of Traffic Police Binod Singh.[break]

They say even some of the traffic police personnel do not have sufficient knowledge of traffic rules and regulations as they are sent on duty within two or three months of recruitment.

"Some police personnel have good educational background, thus they can easily gain traffic knowledge, but those, who do not have good education, take time to understand traffic rules," says Hachhethu.

"Therefore, road accidents can be minimised by providing proper training to all traffic personnel," he says. "It is difficult to control road mishaps and traffic jam until the general public is aware of traffic rules and traffic police personnel play a vital role in spreading awareness."

Singh maintains that many people think that traffic rules are made for traffic police only that they try to violate the traffic rules.

Compared with other age groups, teenagers account for the highest cases of traffic rule violation, says Hachhethu.
