ENT services at Koshi Hospital shut

BIRATNAGAR, April 3: The ear, nose and throat (ENT) services at the Koshi Zonal Hospital has been virtually non-existent for past one-and-a-half year as the doctor sent to the hospital by the government has not turned up. Dr Mukesh Chaurasiya was transferred to the hospital from Birgunj Sub-regional Hospital around 14 months ago.

Neglecting the transfer order of the Health Ministry, Chaurasiya has been running a private clinic in Birgunj.[break]

The ENT department at Koshi Zonal Hospital has remained padlocked in the absence of a specialist and patients thronging the hospital have been returning unattended. “Those who can afford private clinics and nursing homes go there but the poor patients have to return home untreated,” said Dr Rudra Raj Timsina.

The ministry and hospital administration have shown no interest in resolving the crisis. “We have tried our best to restart ENT services but to no avail. This puts the hospital administration and ministry in a poor light,” claimed President of the Hospital Development Committee Employees´ Union Dr Sudhir Shrestha.

There is vacancy for two doctors in the department but attempts to find them have yielded no results so far. Dr Shrestha said the hospital and the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), Dharan are the only public hospitals with ENT facilities in the eastern region.

Medical Superintendent at Koshi hospital Dr Uma Kanta Jha claimed that the ministry has showed no interest despite being apprised about the matter on a dozen occasions. Dr Jha revealed that Dr Chaurasiya had recently come to the hospital with the transfer letter to receive 14 months salary but was returned empty-handed by the hospital administration.
