CARDIFF, Wales, July 10: Australia withered in the face of outstanding England bowling to lose 5-44 on a remarkable third morning of the first Ashes test on Friday.

Australia collapsed to be all out for 308, giving England a substantial lead of 122 on the first innings.

It's the first time England has a first-innings lead in a first Ashes test since 1997 at Edgbaston, 10 series ago.Pacemen James Anderson, Stuart Broad, and Mark Wood showed their home advantage on the slow pitch by bowling full and straight and producing unexpected swing that brought the Australians forward and into trouble.

From 264-5 overnight — Adam Voges was out just before stumps on Thursday — Australia was all out on Friday in less than 15 overs.

Shane Watson, the last recognized batsman, was dispatched in the second over of the day, lbw to Broad for the sixth time. Watson added only four runs to his 26 overnight, and his video review only confirmed he would have seen his leg stump clipped.

The total was the same, and nightwatchman Nathan Lyon was still on his overnight 6, when he was surrounded by nine fielders and caught plumb by Wood.

In successive overs, wicketkeeper Brad Haddin (22), Mitchell Johnson (14), and Mitchell Starc (0) were dismissed, leaving Jason Hazlewood on 2.

Anderson had the second new ball and bagged Haddin with an outswinger for a catch behind, Johnson clipped Broad to the on side straight to Gary Ballance, and Starc's thick edge of Anderson flew straight to Joe Root at third slip.
