“With popular demand and the high number of people wanting to go on the ride is what keeps bringing us back,” says Rabi Thapa, CEO, Sacred Summit, adding, “Last year, we saw 22 participants, and this year we expect around 50, and in the next two years, we hope to double that number.”
The poker run started when Enfield rider Binod Chhetri went to Australia to visit his Australian friend Stewei Mclean and encountered the annual poker run where 100 Harley riders were participating. The idea came up the very moment that it could be replicated in Nepal, too.
But with Binod Chhetri’s untimely death in October 2008, the idea was moved forward by Stewie Mclean, an avid Harley rider and promoter of motorcycle adventures in the Himalaya, and Rabi Thapa of Sacred Summits, and hence, after a year or so, the Enfield Rendezvous and Poker Fun started in Nepal.
“We also plan to promote Nepal Tourism Year 2011 with the ride and hope to lure more quality tourists to Nepal,” informed Thapa. The poker run this year also hopes to collect clothes and donate it to the needful in Sauraha, added Thapa.
To participate in the poker run, registrations are open till April 5. Till date, 30 riders have already registered, and the number is increasing. A one night-two day trip to Sauraha is Rs. 2,500 which covers lodging, food and mechanical support in case of breakdown. However, the bike and fueling expense should be paid by participants.
