KATHMANDU, March 7 the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, in collaboration with Maiti Nepal, commemorated International Women’s Day on the Maiti Nepal premises, on Wednesday. The event, held under the themes of “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” and “Inspire Inclusion,” aimed to honor and acknowledge the remarkable contributions of women.


Ashta Lakshmi Shakya, the first woman Chief Minister of Nepal, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, alongside Prasanna Shrivastava, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, and Anuradha Koirala, founder of Maiti Nepal. The event was attended by various political leaders, representatives of social organizations, students from Maiti Nepal, and distinguished women from diverse backgrounds.

During his address, Deputy Chief of Mission Prasanna Shrivastava praised the exceptional efforts of Maiti Nepal in promoting the welfare and prosperity of women in Nepal. He highlighted Koirala’s significant contributions, noting her prestigious 'Padma Shri' award from the Government of India in 2017.


Ashta Lakshmi Shakya emphasized the importance of the India-Nepal relationship and advocated collective efforts towards women's empowerment. Koirala shared insights into the initiatives and activities undertaken by Maiti Nepal, expressing gratitude for the continued support from the Embassy of India.


The event also witnessed the felicitation of Menuka Paudel and Ratna Kumari Sunuwar for their inspiring achievements. Paudel, renowned for her singing talent, received accolades in Nepal and India, including a recent recognition at Indian Idol 2023. Sunuwar made headlines by passing her Grade 12 exams at the age of 80, demonstrating that age is no barrier to learning. The Embassy of India also gifted books to the students of Maiti Nepal.


The celebrations featured musical performances by women instrumentalists from Kathmandu and cultural presentations by the girl students of Maiti Nepal. Menuka Paudel enthralled the audience with her melodious songs.


In reaffirming its commitment to strengthening ties between India and Nepal, the Embassy of India in Kathmandu pledged continued support to Nepal’s efforts towards the empowerment of girls and women.
