Reinstating the commitment to boost the confidence of business people, NC leaders reminded that the country saw major economic growth during the period when NC was at the helm of the government.
“NC strongly believes that the country can´t achieve economic progress without recognizing the role of private sector in the economy. There should not be any doubt on our commitment to the development of private sector which will be reflected in our election manifesto,” Shushil Koirala, president of NC, said at an interaction organized by the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) on Sunday. Highlighting the impacts of political instability and decade-long Maoist insurgency on national economy, Koirala further said ´undemocratic activities´ demonstrated by some political parties have worsened the economic environment in the country.
“As democracy and economic growth are inter-related, NC is committed to uphold democratic values and create better environment for boosting confidence of private sector, which is the engine of economic growth,” said Koirala.
Speaking at the program, Sher Bahadur Deuba, senior leader of NC, assured the business people of creating investment and industrial friendly environment in the country. “In line with our political ideology, we will not deviate from our commitment of private sector development,” said Deuba.
Highlighting the economic reforms initiated by NC and positive economic impacts that followed, Dr Ram Saran Mahat said event leaders of other political parties are acknowledging the achievements made in various sectors due the economic liberalization initiated by his party.
“We have achieved tremendous progress in health, education, telecommunications and media, among other service sector due to the economic liberalization initiated by NC. Even radical communists are also acknowledging the importance of private sector and liberal economic policy,” Mahat, who is also a former finance minister, said.
Chitra Lekha Yadav, treasurer of NC, also said development of private sector was cornerstone for overall development of the country.
On the occasion, FNCCI asked political parties to include programs with the aim to achieve digit growth and creating employment opportunities to 3.5 million within a decade in their election manifesto.
Similarly, FNCCI also asked political leaders to emphasize on enhancing supply side for promoting exports and bringing down trade deficit. They also urged the leaders to emphasize hydropower sector with strategic plan, strengthen road connectivity, expand Internet access, commercialize agriculture sector and develop tourism sector by exploring new areas.
They also asked political leaders to adopt zero tolerance toward corruption.
“As the country is in need of political instability, restoration of peace, employment generation, promotion of energy sector and infrastructure development, political parties need to focus on these crucial issues in their election manifestos,” Suraj Vaidya, president of FNCCI.
