KATHMANDU, Dec 16: General Secretary of the ruling CPN (Maoist Centre) Dev Prasad Gurung has said that it is beyond imagination to think of choosing a president without having a political background.
UML wins Nepali Congress’s stronghold
General Secretary Gurung said that when foreign interference in the country is rampant, electing a president without political background would give a message of surrendering the national interest to the foreigners. Speaking at a program organized by Sambad Dabali in Kathmandu on Friday, Gurung clarified that there is no alternative to the leadership of the political parties as long as the current arrangement and system remain in place. He made it clear that the ruling five-party alliance did never discuss electing a president from outside the political circle. General Secretary Gurung argued that making a non-political person the president is out of the question in the current political setup.
General Secretary Gurung also forwarded a proposal for his party's chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to lead the new government. But he was of the opinion that since no party has a majority in the parliament, the government's leadership should be decided on the basis of understanding between the political parties. General Secretary Gurung also insisted that the Maoist ideology led the country to the current state and as its leader, it was natural to have a government under the leadership of party chairman Dahal. General Secretary Gurung also said that all parties should cooperate with each other to face the challenges faced by the country.
