“The Constitution of Nepal is committed to building an egalitarian, prosperous and just society based on the principles of proportionality, inclusion and participation. Similarly, women's empowerment in politics has gained momentum with significant participation of women in various elected bodies,” reads the message. “However, despite prohibited by the constitution, many women are still forced to suffer from violence, discrimination and humiliation due to misogynistic practices, traditions and superstitions such as witchcraft, Chaupadi, dowry and untouchability.”
While stressing the need for launching a comprehensive awareness campaign at the family and community level against such malpractices and anomalies in society, President Bhandari stated that the unequal power structure between men and women should be changed by making women financially independent.
President Bhandari in her message also expressed a common commitment and solidarity against gender-based violence, and called on everyone to move forward toward building an egalitarian, just, civilized and prosperous society.
