KATHMANDU, Oct 30: The Election Commission (EC) has begun mobilizing flying squad teams to inspect incidents of violation of the election code of conduct.

According to Chief Election Commissioner Neel Kantha Uprety, the commission on Wednesday deployed three separate flying squads in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts. [break]

EC legal officer Arun Kumar Jha along with security personnel carried out an inspection in Lalitpur district while another team comprising section officer at the EC Dipak Thapa and security personnel carried out checks in Bhaktapur.

Similarly, the commission deployed a third team comprising section officer Rishi Ram Bhushal and security personnel to check poll code related incidents in Kathmandu district.

According to EC officials, the teams instructed some political parties and their cadres to remove posters and flags that were put up in violation of the code of conduct.

The chief election commissioner said there will be more than three such teams to check the poll code violations.

“These squads will act on the spot to correct, prevent and stop any breach of the election code,” Uprety told Republica, adding, “They will also forward the cases to the respective returning officers.”

As rampant violations of the poll code by various political parties and their candidates are being reported from across the country, the EC is tightening the screws against the violators.

The EC last Sunday decided to deploy one more official each in 38 districts that have more than three election constituencies, in order to oversee issues related to the code of conduct.

The commission has already formed a high level panel headed by the chief election commissioner himself to take action in major incidents of code violation. The four election commissioners are members of the high-level panel.

Similarly, the commission has instructed the chief district officers (CDOs) and district police chiefs, through the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), to coordinate with chief returning officers and returning officers for effective implementation of the election code of conduct.

Meanwhile, the election commission has received complaints so far against seven candidates under the proportional electoral system.
