EC pledges to hold elections by May-June

KATHMANDU, Feb 3: The Election Commission (EC) has pledged to conduct the election s by coming May-June. 


Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav, on Friday, said the EC had found a ground to start preparations for the election with the government's Thursday decision. The country has not witnessed the election of local bodies for 19 years and local bodies are functioning without the presence of people's representatives for 14 years.

Taking part in an interaction program organized by the Reporters' Club here Friday, CEC Yadav said, "The Thursday's meeting of the Council of Ministers has paved the way for EC to make preparations for the election." The meeting decided to formally write the EC to get ready for the poll. 


The EC is waiting for further instructions from the government to decide on matters relating to locations of polling centers, mobilization of polling officers and form of ballots, including others. 


It would be easier for the EC to take decisions on technical issues if it was provided the Local Level Restructuring Commission (LLRC) report on time. The EC had already geared up for the election, he said, adding that it was able to hold the election on the intended date. 


Around four months are needed to conduct the election. RSS
