EC completes all preparations for local level by-election

Voting will take place tomorrow from 7 AM to 5 PM at the polling stations established in the respective local levels where the election is being held

KATHMANDU, Nov 30: Voting for the 41 vacant positions at the local level will take place on Sunday. The Election Commission (EC) has stated that all preparations for the by-election have been completed.


Voting will take place tomorrow from 7 AM to 5 PM at the polling stations established in the respective local levels where the election is being held. The by-election is scheduled for 41 positions, including one mayor, one deputy mayor, two rural municipality chairpersons, four deputy chairpersons and 34 ward chairs.


EC's Deputy Secretary, Nita Pokhrel Aryal said that all preparations have been completed at the respective local levels where the by-election will be held.


She stated that arrangements have been made to give priority to pregnant women, persons with disabilities, elderly citizens, patients, mourners, new mothers, and other voters from sexual and gender minorities to vote.


According to Aryal, who is also the spokesperson for the EC, voters whose names are included in the voter list will be allowed to vote based on original documents such as the voter ID card issued by the EC, Nepali citizenship certificate, national identity card, passport, permanent account number (PAN) card, or driving license.

According to the Election Commission, Nepal, by-elections will be held for the post of district coordination committee chief of Okhaldhunga and Kailali, mayor of Kirtipur Municipality of Kathmandu, deputy mayor of Nalgad Municipality of Jajarkot, chairperson of Grantham Rural Municipality of Morang and Mahabu Rural Municipality of Dailekh, Gaurishankar Rural Municipality of Dolakha, Sarkegad Rural Municipality of Humla and Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality of Bajura.


By-elections will also be held for ward chairpersons of Siriganga Rural Municipality-3 of Taplejung, Kankai Municipality-6 of Jhapa, Laligurans Municipality-8 of Tehrathum, Gadhi Rural Municipality-6 of Sunsari, Molung Rural Municipality-5 of Okhaldhunga, Triyuga Municipality-12 of Udayapur, Belka Municipality-9, Dakneshwari Municipality-1 and 4 of Saptari, Dhanushadham Municipality-1 of Dhanusha. 


Likewise, elections will be held for ward chair of Ramgopalpur Municipality-2 of Mahottari, Ishnath Municipality-7, Rajpur Municipality-6 and Gadhimai Municipality-8 of Rautahat.


Information Officer at the Election Commission, Suman Ghimire told RSS that the election will be held for the post of chairperson of Kirtipur Municipality-1 and 4, of Kathmandu, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-16, Kakani Rural Municipality-2 of Nuwakot, Hetauda Municipality-12 of Makawanpur, Gorkha Municipality-5 of Gorkha, Musikot Municipality-1 of Gulmi, Runtigadhi Rural Municipality-4 of Rolpa, Thakurbaba Municipality-4 of Bardiya, Putha Uttarganga Rural Municipality-2 of Rukum (East) and Shuddhodhan Rural Municipality-1 of Kapilvastu.


A total of 376 candidates are competing in the election. In the by-election, candidates from 20 different political parties and independent candidates are competing.


Previously, the candidates from the NC, Tekraj Bhattrai and Tikakumari Chaudhary (Bhul), were elected unopposed as the heads of the District Coordination Committees of Okhaldhunga and Kailali, respectively. Similarly, Jagat Ghurti from the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Center) was elected unopposed for the position of Ward-2 in Puga Uttarganga Rural Municipality, Rukum (East). Nominations for the by-election were registered on November 17.


Election results to be available on website


After the voting process is completed and all the ballot boxes are assembled at designated counting locations, the counting will begin. The updated results of the counting can be viewed on the EC's website, as stated by the EC.


The EC has called on all voters in the respective constituencies who are listed in the voter roll to exercise their right to vote by casting their vote for their preferred candidate.


Voters must take the ballot paper received at the polling station, go to the secret voting booth, and mark their vote by placing a Swastik stamp in the box next to the candidate of their choice.


The EC has stated that the vote will be considered invalid if the ballot paper is torn, if there is no signature of the polling officer, if the vote is marked in the space between two electoral symbols, if the swastika stamp is unclear, if the vote is marked outside the designated box for the candidate's symbol, or if the thumbprint, signature, or any other mark is made instead of the Swastik stamp.
