His family has been staying on an open field following the massive earthquake that destroyed his home. The Subba family has nowhere to go and nothing to eat.
His lowered-voice and tired body language suggests that he is desperately trying to figure out how to support his family members. "Everything we had is now mixed with mud and dust. We can sleep on the wet floor but can't survive with empty stomachs," he moaned. He added that they have been hopeful of receiving a relief package of tents and basic food stuff. "I don't know when the government will notice this place and provide us with relief packages," Subba uttered.
A resident of Nayapati Sanistar in Gokarneshwor municipality Ward No. 6, Prakash managed to take out some of his belongings from the debris but they are covered in dust and have no use.
Similarly, Ranju Lama, another local of the same Ward, expressed grievances about the government's inability to come up with any form of relief package for the people in her area.
"We don't have houses to sleep in and food to eat. Our small children are falling ill as our toilets have been destroyed by the quake and open defecation is presenting health problem," she informed. There are 12 family members in Lama's family and all of them are sleeping in a goat shed next to the debris of her house.
The lack of a coherent strategy to handle such situations by the government means relief packages sent by the international community is delayed at the Tribhuvan International Airport's Customs Department. This means people who desperately require this aid are not receiving it.
Another local Rajin Lama told Republica that the villagers managed to get some 10 tents from the Ward Office but they need much more.
"Our place is just few kilometers away from the centre of Kathmandu but we have been neglected by the government's relief efforts," he added.
Around 20 houses have collapsed in Ward No 6 and 7 in Gokarneshwor municipality and the displaced are awaiting relief packages. However, no serious casualties are recorded in that area.
