bhooshannath@gmail.com It was a terrible experience. My wife, my 8 years old daughter, all the staffs of my office and me were at the epicenter, Sindhupalchowk at the time of Earthquake. We went there for short vacation. We were saved just by 5 minutes several times but all the time God saved us.
One day before, we missed to enter China just by 5 minutes and we went Tatopani to take bath. If we wouldn't have missed to enter China that day, we would be taking bath at time of earthquake.
Just after some moment we left Khasha City where we were shopping at the border side. And just before 5 minutes we enter Nepal, we faced the terrible quake. If that happened after 5 minutes, we all will be buried under the landslide.
We sheltered in China that night. Chinese military and police helped us a lot. All the night we had terrible feelings of double quake. One from small aftershocks and other from quakes occurred from landslides.
We hoped that Nepalese Army and Police will rescue us next morning so we crossed the border. From the moment that we crossed the border, Miteri bridge, we felt like hell. There were neither police nor military. Only trucks, buses destroyed by landslide. We couldn't think anything but ran for our lives. All the roads were full of huge broken cliffs. On the way we saw our jeeps and the hotel we stayed last night were destroyed by rocks fallen down from the mountain above. We didn't have any choice except running ahead. One place I fell down and I saw a corpse was buried under the fallen rocks. Then I was afraid that we may fall like that death body. So I requested all the members of my team to throw all the baggage and carry just the blankets we purchased at Khasha market so that we could run fast and blanket would keep us warm at night.
On the way we saw uncountable corpses on the road buried under the fallen rocks and inside the destroyed buildings. After 5 hours of running (some of them with bare foot) we reached a little safe place where we saw many people were injured and they all were waiting in a big ground just beside Army barrack for the helicopter, to be rescued. But we didn't saw any army personal was active for rescue or other activities. There we felt other big quake. After some rest we again ran ahead because there was possibility of land slide. On the way we saw a man riding bike was pressed under a big rock and that was still in the standing position. We were horrified that the rocks were falling down in such speed. We also saw, from the broken wall of a house, a small boy was lying on the room and buried under mud. Only his head was seen. After sometime we reached a place named Chaku where one side was hill and other side was river and again hill. There people requested us not to go ahead but to shelter there.
But we were trying to go ahead. We reached to power house where a tunnel was being constructed. Above that tunnel, there was still landslide. A bus was trapped there and somebody was alive inside the bus. One brave young man showed the courage to rescue him. But before he could reach there, again a big slide collapsed over the bus and all gone. Then we decided to shelter there at Chaku and we were returning back, a group of workers dared to climb the hill to escape from there. We were crying not to go but they didn't hear us. They just started to climb; they were also buried under the slide. Just after that moment a blast heard. That was the second major quake. After the blast, there were landslides around all hills. We were saved sitting under the slab. No rocks harmed us.
Then we again ran back to Chaku for shelter. There villagers let us to stay under their tents. It was getting dark. We were afraid. Continuous slides were occurring. Someone told that landslide blocked the river and the place was turning to lake. There was no sound of river flow. All were terrified but after some time, blocked river was flowing again. We felt relief for some time. Again some people came from Kathmandu, waking from hills and jungles, told that the hill beside that place was being cracked. It could collapse anytime. They suggested not to stay there. At dawn around 4:30 am all the people in that area began to climb that hill to escape. We also followed them. After climbing 2 hours we succeeded to cross that hill.
We were in other hill then and a big blast was heard. Someone told the hill collapsed that we had just crossed. We thanked God for saving us. The people who did not come with us and stayed down at Chaku were trapped then. But we had no other option, except to climb hills. All were tired by walking, climbing hills. Then we reached Marming village. We stayed for a while. That was a bit high place from where we could see all around. We saw some people were running in front far hill. Before they cross the hill, landslide blocked their way. Then they came down from the same landslide, themselves. They had no option. Some were injured.
It was raining that time. Some said flood will blow all of us. So we have to climb again. After hours of climbing, we reached at top of the hill. That plateau, local called Chaur, was safe place. There all locals from neighboring villages were taking shelter. We were also provided a tent. We rest for some time.
In the day time, military helicopter flew above us. We had little hope. Young ladies flagged red clothes high. The helicopter took two rounds and flew down towards Chaku. It landed in military barrack and rescued some injured people. After some time one private helicopter again flew there. Total 8 helicopters flew there and all the military were rescued from there. We all were embarrassed and felt that only military are human beings not us. That night we slept in cold ground.
One of our team is heart patient and he had no more medicines left. We were afraid that other accident could happen. So we decided to leave that place too. Next morning we headed to Barhabise from jungles, hills, cliffs, springs, muddy ways. Many of us were injured but didn't lost the courage to reach the destination. At last we reached the main road of Barhabise. We felt more relief but that didn't last long. Heavy rain began raining. We had again fear of flood and land slide. Anyway we crossed the last landslide site and reached to police station. There we reported to police about the situation and requested to rescue the victims. Then we hired one jeep and all of us moved towards Kathmandu.
On the way we didn't see any houses in good condition. Everything was cracked, buried under rocks, destroyed. Pitch roads were cracked. People were terrified all the way. After 3 nights and 4 days struggles, at last we reached home with reincarnations. It was a terrible experience.
