KATHMANDU, May 26: The monsoon is expected to arrive earlier this year compared to the average time in Nepal, say the weather experts.

Normally, the monsoon arrives in Nepal on June 13 and leaves Nepal on October 2 every year. “However, various studies conducted by monsoon experts this year have shown that the monsoon is likely to arrive in Nepal a few days earlier than the average,” said Binu Maharjan, a meteorologist at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DoHM).

Maharjan however denied ascertaining the date of monsoon arrival. According to her, the monsoon has already arrived in Kerala, India, a week earlier. “The average time for the weather to arrive in Kerala is the last day of June, but the monsoon has arrived in Kerala a week earlier, on May 24,” said Maharjan, adding that the monsoon usually arrives in Nepal via Kerala and the northeastern region of India.

According to the DoHM, the country is currently under the influence of western winds and local winds. There is also a partial influence of water vapor-rich air from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.

Based on the estimation of the average rainfall in the past three decades, meteorologists have estimated that this year's monsoon season will see more rain and heat than average in the South Asian region. Last year too, Nepal received more than the average rainfall. In Nepal, usually, about 80 percent of the rainfall occurs during the monsoon season.

Last year, the monsoon arrived in Nepal on June 14, a day later than normal time. The rainfall during the rainy season last year broke the records. According to the DoHM, on July 8, 2024, Dodhara Chandni received the record high rain water of 624 mm in 24-hour period. Previously, the highest rainfall took place in Hetauda on August 13, 2017, with a total of 516.2 millimeters of rain in 24 hours.

Following the incident, the DoHM deployed a team of meteorologists to study the rainfall in Dodhara Chandni. Last year, not only Dodhara Chandni, but two other stations also broke the rainfall record. Hanuman Nagar and Sundarpur stations in Kanchpur also measured the highest rainfall that year.
