LAMJUNG, July 12: With the structures in place to control landslides at Udipur along the Dumre-Besisahar road, vehicular movement has become easier and safer even during the rainy season. The structures were built at a cost of Rs 111.9 million by the federal government.
According to information officer at the Dumre-Besisahar-Chame Road Planning Office, Navin Bista, micropiles have been constructed along the Marsyangdi River, which provides a protective wall on the river bank. Similarly, a 45-metre high and 80-metre long gabion mesh, 300-metre road blacktop and nailing were constructed in the area hit by landslide above the road.
Landslide again disrupts Dumre-Besisahar road
Babulal Shrestha from Besisahar said travel at Udipur has become safer and easier after the landslide control measure. “Last year, we faced severe problems several times during the monsoon. We were panicked over the possible fall of stones from the hills above. But, now we can travel with confidence. The road has improved and there is no fear of landslides,” he said.
Narayan Ghimire, who is a regular driver on this road, shared happiness for being able to drive safely at Udipur. He also remembered the horrible past of frequent landslides forcing vehicles to use alternative routes to reach their destinations every day during the monsoon.
The Dumre-Besisahar road is the major route connecting Lamjung and Manang. It also facilitated travel to the Annapurna Circuit Trek.
