Many student enrollment campaigns have been organized in the district to increase the literacy rate but most of the enrolled students drop out before completing the secondary level.[break]
According to District Education Officer (DEO) Daman Singh Chaudhary, 25 per cent students quit schools last year. Of them, five percent were secondary level students, six percent were lower secondary and 13 per cent were primary level students, he informed. Migration, unavailability of scholarship and financial problems are among the major factors that lead the students to quit schools, according to Chaudhary.
“Considering this fact, this year we have demanded the stakeholders concerned to provide essential education materials and scholarship to maximum possible number of students through the coordination with local non-government organizations,” said the DEO.
According to coordinator of Banke UNESCO Club Khusi Ram Chaudhary, over 700 students were enrolled during this year’s enrolment campaign. Most of them are primary level students. The club is one of several organisations supporting the enrollment campaign in the district.
Besides, it is found that many students are forced to quit the schools as they have to support their families to earn a livelihood because of their poor economic background.
