Dressing beyond gender codes

Men could also experiment with makeup. Paint your nails, put on a prominent shade of lipstick or eyeshadow, put on mascara or fake lashes, highlight your cheekbones or nose – just about any kind of makeup would make you appear more androgynous. Longer hair or dyed hair also goes well with the look.

Androgynous fashion is a gender neutral dressing trend practiced to avoid or blur the common gender stereotype of what’s traditionally “feminine” or “masculine”. In the past androgynous fashion has held a huge stigma, with its ties to the feminist and LGBTQ communities. But in modern fashion, androgyny has become far more accessible and experimental.

Think Jaden Smith or Kanye West rocking a leather skirt, of Cara Delevingne, Rihanna, Ellen DeGeneres or Julia Roberts donning a tuxedo with a bralette or tight and cropped blouse and Ruby Rose or Harry Styles styling (pun completely intended) floral or absurd patterned shirts with skinny jeans, Chelsea boots and a duster coat.

This dressing style has been practiced time and again in ancient as well as modern history but had an imputative reputation as it had very close affinity with feminism and the LGBTQ community. In the recent years, it has been widely accepted as more and more people are introducing this style into their wardrobes. Dressing gender neutral has become “the new cool”. Here’s how you can do it too.

For women
Loose and slightly baggier clothing articles are staple female androgynous style essentials. Starting with the bottoms, you can opt for a mom jeans or boyfriend jeans instead of the pair of skinny jeans you usually wear. Formal slacks, tailored trousers, straight leg pants, cargo pants, and bush pants also provide an androgynous silhouette.

You cannot really go wrong with shorts for androgynous dressing just as long as you stay away from frills and bows. Cargo shorts are always a great option. Overalls and dungarees in all styles (pants, shorts or dresses) go very well with androgynous theme.

Continuing with the baggy fit theme, pick slightly looser tops. Again, you cannot really go wrong with tops, tees and shirts – just avoid the extremely feminine silhouettes. Tailored shirts and tops with a crew, boat, or turtle neckline are excellent choices for androgynous look.

And just because you are dressing androgynously does not mean you have to avoid clothing articles like skirts and dresses altogether. Apply the loose fit rule to your dresses. Or maybe wear a tight dress but layer it with a cardigan or an overcoat, a scarf, a hat, and a pair of tights. Shirt dresses and t-shirt dresses are good options.

As for skirts, just pair them with looser tops and you’re good to go. For an even more profound look, you could always pair your skirts and dresses with a pair of pants underneath them.

Choosing neutral or darker colored clothes also help with the androgynous outline. Even if you are wearing a typical “feminine” outfit, just make sure the color scheme sticks to black, white, navy, tan, brown, and grey.
Another thing you could do to appear more androgynous would be to wear dark makeup. Dark eyeshadow, bold brows, and dark lip colors really complement androgynous look. Or you could take the exact opposite route by ditching makeup altogether. Step out of your house in your bare faced glory. Sharp and short haircut also gives you an edgy appearance. Adopt hairstyles like a short pixie or blunt bob.

For men

While women are advised to eliminate completely feminine silhouettes, patterns and combinations, men are recommended to do the exact opposite. Pick out outfits that have charisma and personality avoiding bland outfits in neutral color palette, especially the typical “male outfit” i.e. a vest (t-shirt) and a pair of jeans.
Look for loud bold pieces. Maybe a cropped shirt or a pair drop crotch pants or for the severely experimental dude – you could take a page out of Vin Diesel, Jared Leto, or Justin Bieber’s book and flaunt a pleated skirt or a dress.

Keep an eye out for brighter colors like yellow, pink, any kind of pastel colors that make your outfit look flamboyant and loud. Clothing articles with frills, ruffles, embellishment and embroidery would be a good call while dressing androgynously. Do not shy away from tighter or shorter clothing articles especially in tops, t-shirts, shirts or anything you would wear on the upper half of your body. And, while you are at it, incorporate patterned clothes and designs that men wouldn’t usually wear.

Accessorizing your look
For footwear, wearing shoes with heels would go well with the androgynous theme. Opt for big pointed heels like stilettos or if those are extremely uncomfortable to wear you could grab a pair of wedges or block heels. Ankle boots, thigh high boots or, in fact, any kind of boots could be worn. As for the flat shoe option, slip on a pair of Oxford shoes.

Accessorize your outfit with statement rings, necklaces, earrings or ear studs and bracelets. For accessories, you could go both ways: You could keep the accessories to a minimal or pile on as much as you want. Fasten a big studded (or maybe not studded – it’s up to you) belt around your waist and you are good to go.
