KATHMANDU, Jan 24: Representatives from various sectors on Sunday urged Dr Govinda KC, a senior professor at the Institute of Medicine (IoM), to put off his hunger strike, which he has warned to begin from Monday, for the time being.

Dr KC had warned of starting a fast-unto-death protest from Monday citing government indifference to his demands. However, a team of representatives from various sectors handed a memorandum to Dr KC on Sunday requesting him to hold off his hunger strike for some time.

Dr KC had warned that he would be compelled to resume his hunger strike from Monday if the bill on Manamohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences is not withdrawn from the parliament.

The delegations that met Dr KC have also called on the government and lawmakers to withdraw the bill before Dr KC launches another hunger strike. They have even warned of joining Dr KC's protest if the bill is not withdrawn immediately.

Apart from pulling back the bill on Manamohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences from the parliament, Dr KC has also demanded that all the past agreements reached between him and government representatives be honored.

The cabinet meeting on Friday has formed a Medical Education Commission to devise a new medical policy based on the recommendations of a high-level task force led by Kedar Bhakta Mathema.

The government's move only partially meets the demand raised by Dr KC who has also been calling for the withdrawal of Manamohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences-2015 bill that has been tabled in the parliament, implementation of the past pact regarding the selection of office bearers of universities, and formation of judicial probe committee to investigate the anomalies in the medical education sector.

The Manamohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences-2015 bill has reached Women, Senior Citizen and Social Welfare Committee of parliament.

Dr KC has also warned to include the issues related to the blockade and the suffering of the people resulting from it among his new demands if he is compelled to start another hunger strike.

Meanwhile, chairman of the parliament's Women, Senior Citizen and Social Welfare Committee, Ranju Kumari Jha, said that the bill has reached the committee following due process. "The bill was prepared by the Ministry of Health and Population, then approved by the cabinet and then tabled in the parliament," said chairman Jha, adding, that all the parliamentarians had held a debate on the bill and then forwarded it to the committee.

"Chances of withdrawing the bill from the committee is very slim as it was sent fulfilling the due process," added Jha.
