Minister for Information and Communication, Minendra Rijal, who is also the government spokesperson, had written a letter to Dr KC requesting him to hold off his huger strike for some time as the country was in the final stages of formulating the new constitution. Spokesperson Rijal reiterated the government commitment to follow through on all the past accords signed between Dr KC and government representatives."Keeping the difficult situation of the country in mind I decided postpone my ultimatum by a week," Dr KC said. He informed that the government has reassured him that all past agreements with him would be implemented.
Dr KC, who ended his 14- day long hunger strike on Sunday following a 11-point deal, had warned to resume fresh hunger strike from 4 pm on Friday if the government did not take immediate steps through the cabinet on forming a health professional education commission.
As per the agreement between Dr KC's team and the government representatives, the 11-point deal would be endorsed by the next cabinet meeting and that immediate steps would be taken toward forming a health professional education commission. However, instead of taking the decision to form the commission, the meeting of council of ministers held on Monday entrusted the cabinet's Social Affairs Committee to look into the matter of forming the commission.
Meanwhile, Dr KC has demanded the government to enforce other agreements like setting a cap on MBBS fee as recommended by Mathema task force report and gradual reduction of MBBS seats per medical college to 100.
