KATHMANDU, Sept 1: Dr Govinda KC has announced that he will start a Satyagraha (fast-unto-death) from September 15 if his demands are not met.

In a press release issued today, Dr KC stated "We had planned to start the fast-unto-death from August 14 with various demands. We postponed the fast-unto-death for a month after receiving various commitments from the government. If those commitments are not fulfilled, we declare that we will begin a fast-unto-death from September 15.”

Dr KC also urged the government to ensure the selection of qualified candidates free from conflicts of interest. He expressed concerns about certain applicants implicated in serious irregularities, proven corruption, and unsuccessful management of institutions, vying for the position of Vice Chairperson of the Medical Education Commission.

A list of nine candidates, including the current Vice Chairperson of the Medical Education Commission, Prof Dr Shrikrishna Giri, who were allegedly chosen through unlawful seat allocation influenced by party cadres and outside interests, was released on Thursday. Dr KC noted that directors from private medical colleges and other vested groups have also targeted the commission.

Dr KC’s statement reads, "Despite political interference, criminal hooliganism and obstructions in the first four years after the establishment of the Medical Education Commission, the Commission has succeeded in doing significant work in improving medical education and maintaining the autonomy of the Commission." Now, if a person who is corrupt or has a conflict of interest becomes the vice chairman, there is a risk that all those achievements will be reversed. If such candidates are selected as officials, there is a risk of making Nepal's medical education substandard and ruinous, contrary to the concept of the Medical Education Act.”

"Therefore, after understanding the entire background of such candidates, we draw the attention of all concerned authorities to select only the well-qualified candidates who have an honest image, excellent performance record and no conflict of interest and appoint the vice chairman from among them," KC said.
