KATHMANDU, March 17: Nepal Police, with the help of their Indian counterparts, has arrested Rohit Paliwal Agrawal, an Indian national who allegedly masterminded the kidnapping of Dr. Bhaktaman Shrestha last year.

Agrawal had been on the run, hiding in India, after the release of the executive director of Bharatpur Cancer Hospital after 18 days in captivity. A heavy ransom worth more than Rs 10 million was paid to secure his release. [break]

Agrawal had allegedly plotted the renowned surgeon´s abduction together with Bhimsen Pandit, who is yet to be nabbed.

Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) claimed that a team under a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) had arrested Agrawal from Gaddachouki in Kanchanpur district on Wednesday afternoon. He was there with a plan to kidnap another Nepali businessman. CIB also said that Agrawal was found possessing brown sugar at the time of the arrest.

Sources, however, claim that the arrest was a reciprocal gesture from the Indian police after Nepal Police agreed to hand over two Indian criminals currently lodged in a jail in the capital.

Agrawal has been charged with several crimes in Nepal including four kidnappings. He was arrested and released on bail in connection with a kidnapping case in 2009. Badri Dhungana, Sunil Shrestha and Navin Shrestha who were also involved in Bhaktaman´s kidnapping are already in prison.
