KATHMANDU, June 28: Minister for Home Affairs Ram Bahadur Thapa urged one and all not to be stubborn on their demand to make Maitighar Mandala as an area of protest.

At a press conference held in the MoHA, Thapa said that the government had decided to prohibit any form of protests at Maitighar Mandala to ensure security and safety.

The government’s decision to prohibit protests at Maitighar Mandala, Bhadrakali and Baneshwor has drawn wide criticism from civil society and political parties.

Dr. Govinda KC, senior orthopedic surgeon at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital is at the forefront of the debate where he’s threatened to start a protest if the government failed to back-track its decision.

Bibeksheel Sajha Party has called the government’s decision as totalitarian and infringing citizen’s rights to protest.

“The areas are crowded and protests could lead to accidents,” Thapa said as he defended the government’s decision.
