KAILALI, Aug 6: The number of Dolphins in Kandra, Patharaiya, Kanda and Mohana rivers of Kailali is reported to be on the decline.

Severe floods with soil erosion, use of toxin substance for fishing and absence of conservation efforts to protect the rare species of aquatic animal have been attributed to the gradual disappearance of Dolphins from the rivers.[break]

The 22 kilometers of area starting from Badaiwaghat to Himmatpur in the west via the Mohana river is regarded as appropriate place of habitation for the Dolphins, according to Dolphin conservationist Bhoj Raj Shrestha.

Dolphins were a regular sight when water level rose in the rivers especially during monsoon. However, it has become rare these days, said Subash Shah of Paderiya in Bhajani-3.

Locals here are also of the view that the Government should take special initiative to stop the Dolphins from becoming extinct.
