SURKHET, April 16: A year after a deadly outbreak of cholera and diarrhea killed over 300 persons in the mid and far western regions, one person died of dehydration on Friday morning in Jajarkot district, the epicenter of last year´s epidemic.

According to the District Administration Office (DAO) of Jajarkot, one Dharmi Shah, of Junga Thapachaur VDC, succumbed to diarrhea that affected him after he ate sel rotis (deep fried rice flour dough nuts) cooked in vegetable ghee in his neighborhood. Dharmi´s mother-in-law was affected by diarrhea but she overcame it.

According to Chief District Officer (CDO) Khyam Bahadur Thapa, Dharmi did not go to a nearby health post though it was just 200 meters from his house. Last year, 154 persons died of diarrhea and cholera in Jajarkot alone.

According to CDO Thapa, three dozens villagers in Pajaru and Bhagawati villages had been affected by diarrhea last week. As the summer approaches, people in and around Jajarkot fear another deadly outbreak of diarrhea and cholera.

The government, which claims to be well prepared for containing any outbreak, has not taken preventive measures to keep such a deadly epidemic at bay.
