DHANGADHI, Aug 17: Security has been beefed up in Dhangadhi Municipality as it remained tense throughout Monday following sporadic clashes between those for and those against thaurhat.

Those against tharuhat have been staging protests and burning tyres on various major thoroughfares of the city while the supporters have been organizing a corner meeting at Campus Chowk.

Police erected barricades at three different points including LN Chowk to prevent any untoward incidents.

Tharuhat supporters have brought the city to a grinding halt, enforcing a strike since the past 10 days. Meanwhile, those against Tharuhat earlier called off their protest after an agreement with the four major political parties. However, they descended onto the streets again on Monday, angered by "offensive comments" made by Upendra Yadav, Amresh Singh and Rajendra Mahato during a protest meeting held in Tikapur.

According to Gopal Deuba, coordinator of the protest mobilization committee, they will continue their agitation until the demand for an intact Far-West is met. "We will not allow Kailali and Kanchanpur to be separated. Hence, we have decided to continue our protest," said Deuba.

Chief District Officer of Kailali, Ram Kumar Shrestha, informed that security personnel have been placed on high alert. "A large number of security personnel have been deployed in various places to avoid untoward incidents," he said.

Meanwhile, the Tharu communities have decided to extend their strike for four more days. "We have decided to continue our strike for four more days till August 21 as our demands have not been addressed," said Ramjanam Chaudhary, chairman of Forum Loktantrik.

The continuous strikes have created shortages of daily necessities. Locals are also unable to earn their daily bread and light their kitchen fires.
