Dhami stuns No 1 Shrestha

KATHMANDU, Sept 7: Nepal Champion and top ranked Bikash Shrestha lost his very first match in the First Pushpa Lal Memorial National Ranking Badminton Tournament on Wednesday while woman´s No 1 Pooja Shrestha got off to a flying start.



The 14th seed Dipesh Dhami stunned Shrestha in the opening match. Dhami lost first set 14-21 but made a come-back in the second and third set with the scores of 21-13, 21-14 in order to register a win over Shrestha in men´s singles. [break]



However, Shrestha managed to win other two matches in the day one of the event. He defeated Bishnu Katuwal 21-17, 21-12 and Sudip Sedai 21-19, 21-16.

Katuwal was defeated by Dhami too. Dhami won the match 15-21, 21-11, 21-15.



In the women´s singles, Nepal Champion Pooja Shrestha registered three wins from three matches. Shrestha defeated Samjhana Khaling 21-18, 21-10, Jalmaya Gurung 21-11, 21-12 and Anita Ghimire 21-4, 21-5 strengthening her bid to enter the next round.



Second seed Nangsal Devi Tamang registered a 21-7, 21-10 win over Mina Shrestha and a 21-13, 21-14 win over Punam Gurung. Tamang was defeated by her own sister Sara Devi Tamang 21-7, 21-10. Sara Devi Tamang, who was out of the court for a year because of knee injury, eased past Samjhana Sharma 21-11, 21-9 in another match. Sara is ranked 10th in the event.



Third seed Samjhana Khaling faced two defeats in three matches. No 1 Shrestha and Sabina Panthi register win over Khaling while she humiliated Jalmaya Gurung 21-8, 21-8. Fourth seeded Mina Shrestha lost two matches and won one.

In the men´s section, second seed Ratnajit Tamang overpowered Prajwal Jung Rana 21-6, 21-11 and Bibek Shrestha 21-14, 21-16.



Third seed Indra Mahata registered win against Basanta Bajracharya 21-9, 21-13 and Bishal Pradhan 13-21, 21-17, 21-18 and lost to Ram Singh Chaudhary 18-21, 11-21.



Fifth seed Bibek Shrestha lost his both matches. Shrestha lost to Tamang in the first match and in the second match Pankaj Chand defeated him 21-13, 21-19.

Fourth seed Sajan Krishna Tamrakar won his both matches against Sahadev Khadka 21-19, 21-10 and Deepak Bohara 21-11, 21-10.



In men´s singles, Bishnu Katuwal, Sudip Sedai, Sahadev Khadka and Surya Thapa registered a victory each. Similarly, in the U-17 boys´ singles Bibek Karki, Shiva KC, Ashish Thapalia, Saroj Ansari, Sani Dev Bhatta, Bishal Moktan, Pitamber Thapa, Ganesh Raymajhi, Bijesh Thapa and Shiva Bista registered wins.
