KATHMANDU, Jan 31: Nepali Congress (NC) senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba-aligned leaders have decided to continue exerting pressure on the party establishment faction for a ´package deal´ on all appointments to be made in the party.

A joint meeting of Deuba-aligned Central Working Committee and parliamentary party members held at Deuba´s residence in Budhanilakantha Tuesday decided that the task of forming the party´s parliamentary board, nominating five new CWC members and resolving the disputes relating to the sister organizations should be done immediately and simultaneously.[break]

"Most of those speaking at today´s [Tuesday´s] meeting argued that there is no alternative to party unity and we should exert pressure on the establishment faction for a package deal that will help strengthen party unity," said Gopal Man Shrestha.

Shrestha said a meeting scheduled for Wednesday afternoon will take a decision to this effect. "Our colleagues are putting forth their opinions on the issue," he said.

At the beginning of the meeting, Deuba, Shrestha and Bimalendra Nidhi had apprised the party members of what transpired during negotiations with the establishment faction. Nearly a dozen leaders including Jip Chhiring Lama, Purna Bahadur Khadka, Govinda Raj Joshi, Bal Krishna Khand, Laxmi Pariyar, Jiwan Shahi and I B Gurung spoke during Tuesday meeting.

Leaders participating in the meeting said they will fix the date for next gathering of Deuba-aligned district committee presidents on Wednesday.

Dispute between the establishment faction and Deuba faction in the NC surfaced after President Koirala in September 2011 dissolved the executive committees of various sister organizations including Nepal Students´ Union, Nepal Tarun Dal and Nepal Women´s Association. Tuesday´s meeting was held after a proposal developed by leaders close to President Koirala failed to impress Deuba faction.

The establishment faction had proposed to the Deuba faction to name the chiefs of Nepal Tarun Dal and Nepal Women´s Association, along with assurance of proportional representation of the Deuba faction in the party´s 32 various departments and its work performance committee.  The proposal worked out by senior leaders close to Koirala had suggested putting on hold the formation of the party´s parliamentary board and the pending five nominations in CWC.

The Deuba faction, however, has demanded a ´package deal´ that includes at least four of the five remaining CWC positions including one joint general secretary and immediate formation of the party´s parliamentary board, which is responsible for picking party candidates for general elections and appointing the party´s zone chiefs.
