KATHMANDU, June 2: Senior leader of the Nepali Congress (NC) Sher Bahadur Deuba has urged the agitating political parties to set aside their differences and participate in the polls.

Addressing a function organized to mark the 90th birth anniversary of late NC leader Girija Prasad Koirala in the capital on Tuesday, Deuba said, it is not appropriate of the agitating parties to demand dissolution of the Khil Raj Regmi-led government for participation in the poll process.[break]

Claiming that the Constituent Assembly (CA) polls would be held by the Regmi government on the scheduled date, Deuba said, “Do not run after rumors. Be prepared for polls.” Deuba also urged agitating parties to devote their energies toward holding polls instead of demanding dissolution of the current government.

Stating that only fresh elections can bring the peace process back on track, Deuba said, “If we dissolve the current government, we would take another year to pick a new prime minister. If this happens, who will hold the election?”

On the occasion, he also lauded late NC leader Koirala as a statesman who played an instrumental role in bringing the former Maoist rebels into mainstream politics. “I remember late Koirala as a statesman with an ability to make prompt decisions,” he said.

Addressing the function, NC General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula said that no one can stop the election scheduled for November 1“. “Negotiations are under way to bring all the agitating parties, including the CPN-Maoist onboard the election process,” he said. “All their genuine demands will be addressed. But no one can stop the election now.”

Speaking at the same function, NC CWC members Narahari Acharya and Ambika Basnet argued that party should stand united for victory in the polls.

Kedar Nath Timilsina, who was injured during the people´s movement in April, 2006, was honored on the occasion.

Meanwhile, NC organized a plantation program in Shanti Batika Tuesday to mark late Koirala´s birth anniversary.

Speaking on the occasion, General Secretary Sitaula expressed commitment that NC would take the political journey started by late Koirala to its logical end.

Sitaula said that NC had sacrificed a lot to bring the Maoists into mainstream politics, abolish the 240-year old institution of monarchy and hold the first Constituent Assembly (CA) election in April, 2008.

Various sister organizations of NC had also organized various programs in the capital on Tuesday to mark late Koirala´s birth anniversary.
