Detainees escape police cell through ventilation

BIRATNAGAR, Oct 27: Two persons kept under judicial custody at the Area Police Office, Rani, in connection with a murder investigation, escaped by breaking the ventilation window of the cell on Thursday.

Mohammad Saddam Hussein of Biratnagar-17 and Mohammad Arif Aalam of Biratnagar-17 who were arrested on the charge of abduction and murder escaped the prison after midnight on Thursday, according to police. Manoj KC, the chief of the District Police Office (DPO), Morang, informed that the detainees managed to cut the six rods of the ventilation window and fled.

The District Police Office has formed an investigation committee to see if there was any police involvement in the incident. DSP Nishan Thapa has been named coordinator of the committee. This incident occurred when Santosh Niraula, the chief police inspector of the APO was on leave.

Seven security personnel of the APO who were on duty that day have been summoned to the DPO, Morang for interrogation. Two police personnel have been suspended immediately. The detainees were arrested on the charge of kidnapping and murdering their own friend Astaf Hussein of Biratnagar-17 on September 17.
