KATHMANDU, Aug 6: Buddhist, Kiratis, Muslims, Christians and Shikh faithful have appealed for retaining secular status in the new constitution as per the Interim Constitution, 2007.

At a press conference held by Religious Secularism Protection General Committee here Thursday, the religious gurus of the different faiths said they would not accept any other term or 'religious freedom' that supplants the secular status of the country guaranteed in the Interim Constitution.

Nepal Buddhist Federation Chairman Phupu Chembe Sherpa said the state must not adopt a policy of protecting a certain religion. He stressed equal treatment for all religions for sake of lasting peace.

Pastor Uttam Pariyar expressed his frustration at the alleged conspiracy after the second Constituent Assembly elections to remove the secular status, which the first CA had introduced. Pariyar said the state must treat all equally.

In a statement issued by thervadi Buddhist sect monk Kondanya, Federation Chair Sherpa, Vajrayana sect's Prof Dr Nareshman Bajracharya, Kirant's Dekendra Singh Thegim, Muslim community's Najuraladin Hussain, Christian community's Uttam Pariyar and Shikh guru Buraksh Singh said that the attempt to remove the word secularism from the constitution would not be acceptable for them.

They warned that the General Committee would be compelled to counter conspiracy to remove religious secularism in the constitution and that the government would be responsible for any untoward incidents arising from it. RSS
