KATHMANDU, Sept 5: Nepali manpower agencies have said the demand for Nepali workers in Qatar has declined with the latter prioritizing workers from other labor exporting countries.

They have formally apprised the Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (NAFEA) about the challenges that Nepali migrant workers may face in one of their key labor destinations. Nepali workers are mainly employed in construction, service and security sector in Qatar. [break]

Kamal Tamang, secretary of NAFEA, said Qatari employers have shifted their priority to other labor exporting countries -- mainly Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar.

“Cutting down job quotas for Nepali workers in Qatar has become a serious issue and we are going to raise the issue with Nepali mission in Qatar soon,” said Tamang, who is also the managing director of Himarab Overseas.

Kumud Khanal, general secretary of NAFEA, has also confirmed that manpower agencies involved in sending workers to Qatar have urged NAFEA to take initiatives to resolve the problem by consulting the Nepali embassy in Qatar.

According to the Department of Foreign Employment, a total of 510,148 Nepali workers left for Qatar over a period of 16 years. The number of workers leaving for Qatar during the fiscal year 2009/10 was recorded at 57,340, of whom 284 were women.
