BAGLUNG, Sept 2: Fearing ostracism, residents of a Dalit settlement in Baglung have started building toilets of their own. Setu BK of Sigana VDC-9 now uses his own toilet to respond to nature´s call instead of rushing to open fields. Almost every house in the Dalit settlement now has its own toilet. “Though the wealthy ones have built concrete toilets, we could not afford it.

So we have built composting toilets,” said BK. According to Ram Prasad Upadhyaya Secretary of Sigana VDC, the campaign was lead by Sigana VDC and Baglung District Development Committee (DDC). “Besides 17 community toilets in the VDC, there are altogether 683 toilets in the village houses,” said Upadhyaya. Local Development Officer of the district Punya Bikram Poudel said the district would be declared excreta-free zone by 2013.
