NEPALGUNJ, July 11: A 32-year-old man who was severely beaten by a group of "higher caste" people in Nepalgunj has succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

Ram Bahadur Nepali of Dhadwar - 2 was mercilessly thrashed by Krishna Tharu, Sitaram Tharu and Lohora Tharu on June 29 after he inadvertently touched their glass of liquor. [break]

“My husband had gone to Sitaram Tharu´s house to celebrate Kalawa festival on Asar 15. But that led to his murder,” said the deceased´s wife Khagirasa.

Khagirasa further said that Ram Bahadur had collapsed on the floor after the beating. The three people, who were completely inebriated, had sprinkled water on Ram Bahadur´s face to see if the latter had died. Nepali had dragged himself to a nearby shop to rescue himself. “But the culprits did not leave him even there. There was a deep cut on his head,” she said.

Nepali, however, was still alive and reached his house at around 8 pm to narrate everything to his wife. “Even though he told me of the attack I did not take it seriously as he too was drunk. But I had noticed that his face was badly swollen,” she said.

Next day, Nepali, who was heading to a jungle with his wife collapsed on the way. His nephews Karna and Chandra took him to a health post and later to Kohalpur medical college where he died while undergoing treatment.

“We are investigating into the incident,” said Khadakbahadur Bhandari, in-charge of the area police office in Baniyabhar.
