Dairy farmers on warpath

KATHMANDU, August 13: Accusing the government of not heeding to their demands for increasing price of milk, dairy farmers have decided to protest against the government from Monday. [break]

Dhaka Ram Arayal, chairman of Central Dairy Co-operatives -- an umbrella organization of dairy farmers, said the five-day protest includes sit-in at the southern gate of Singha Durbar to chakkajam on major highways.

"We had to announce protest because our efforts to settle the issue through dialogue failed," Aryal told myrepublica.com.

As per the plan, farmers will organize a sit-in at the southern gate of Singha Durbar for two hours on August 17 and organize chakkaram in Kavre and Khanikhola of Dhading for two hours on August 19 and a nation-wide chakkajam for three hours on August 21.

Citing sharp rise in price of inputs, including cost of cows and buffaloes, feeds and nutrients over a couple of years, farmers have demanded an increment of at least Rs 4 per liter on the price of fresh of milk.

A high-level committee, led by DN Pathak -- executive director of Dairy Development Board, recently made different recommendations to the government, including raising milk price by Rs 4 to Rs 38 per liter. The committee made the recommendations after studying different factors affecting cost of milk production at different parts of the country.
